Usually, when pop or Hollywood royalty move into a neighborhood, property prices soar. In the case of the once sleepy surf town of Montecito, California, actual royalty—The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, or Harry and Meghan to their friends—have cast a further spotlight on the upscale celebrity-filled enclave, attracting visitors and the media.
“They definitely have brought a lot of attention to my sleepy little town,” actor Rob Lowe — longtime Montecito resident — told E! News, claiming that even the lines at Starbucks were longer since their arrival.

Meghan chose not to film her new Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) show, “With Love, Meghan,” in her $14.65 million 7.4-acre Mediterranean-styled Montecito mansion. She feared a horde of filmmakers would disrupt her children’s lives, limiting only exterior shots of her family home.
“I wanted to protect that safe haven,” she told People. “We’re a close-knit family, and I love those moments — putting Lili down for a nap, having lunch together, having sacred time together at the end of the day. Our kitchen is where Mama just cooks for the family, and with a crew of 80-plus people, that’s a lot of people to have in your house!”
Since moving to their home in 2020, the Sussexes have put Montecito on the map, even though fellow A-listers who called the Santa Barbara County town home also already included Oprah Winfrey, Arianna Grande, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Katy Perry.

Although Meghan was reluctant to film her new show in her actual home, to maintain authenticity, she stayed within Montecito, choosing a location that resembles her homestead. According to Realtor.com, she settled on a four-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom property owned by local philanthropists Tom and Sherrie Cipolla. The listing site says the property’s value has nearly doubled since the Cipollas purchased it for $4.7 million in 2017, valued at around $8 million today.
The Sussex’s five-year Netflix deal, including her recently debuted show, is worth $100 million. In each episode, she invites celebrity friends to the home, offering tips on homemaking and cooking, similar to domestic lifestyle queen Martha Stewart. Netflix describes the show as “a heartfelt tribute to the beauty of Southern California.”

Should the show succeed, it will bring further attention to the Sussex’s new hometown in the way Stewart is associated with Connecticut and Joanna Gaines with Waco, Texas. Fittingly, like other domestic lifestyle celebrities, Meghan has a lifestyle brand, As Ever, prepped and ready to go. The company’s website, Asever.com, sells food products featured on the show. Called initially American Riviera Orchard, she changed the company name as that name is already synonymous with the Santa Barbara area where she lives. In addition, Meghan has a new podcast with Lemonada Media in the works.
The move into lifestyle media and retail could be a savvy move. Forbes estimates Stewart’s net worth as $970 million, while in a few short years Chip and Joanna Gaines have turned their HGTV show “Fixer Upper” into a multi-million dollar entire lifestyle brand encompassing furnishings, a magazine, food products, rental real estate and more. In her lifestyle guru revamp, Meghan must be hoping for more of the same.
