The downside of Anthony Albanese’s decision to delay calling the election after ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred appeared off the coast of north-eastern Australia is that the phoney campaign will be extended and crucial business investment decisions will remain on hold.
Alfred was thankfully downgraded before making landfall on Saturday. Nevertheless, communities across south-east Queensland and north-east New South Wales have still suffered significant storm damage and flash flooding. The death toll stands at one, with 13 Australian Defence Force personnel injured in a truck collision near the northern NSW town of Lismore, which has been inundated for the second time in three years after it was devastated by flood waters in 2022.
