Investing.com -- Evercore ISI analysts highlighted several key catalysts in 2025 that could accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and robotaxis, driving the industry's momentum toward the physical AI revolution.
The firm explained in a note this week that Waymo, one of the leading players in the space, plans to launch test vehicles in 10 new cities in 2025, including San Diego and Las Vegas.
Additionally, they note that Waymo will extend its partnership with Uber (NYSE:UBER), launching exclusively through the Uber app in Austin in March and Atlanta in Q2.
Evercore predicts that these expansions will significantly boost Waymo’s presence in key markets.
Another major development is Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s Zoox. “Amazon’s Zoox, which is currently testing in San Francisco, Foster City, and Las Vegas, is expected to launch a paid commercial robotaxi service to the general public this year (Las Vegas should be first in 1H),” said Evercore.
Meanwhile, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is set to introduce a paid robotaxi service in Austin in June, with Elon Musk promising the rollout of "unsupervised" full self-driving (FSD) in multiple regions, including California, later in 2025.
Evercore ISI also notes that Waymo is rapidly gaining market share in California, with 541,000 trips completed in December 2024, up from 504,000 in November.
“Waymo reached 200k+ paid trips per week in February, up from 150k+ paid trips per week in October,” added Evercore.
Additionally, Waymo's pick-up times in San Francisco are said to have improved, surpassing those of Lyft (NASDAQ:LYFT), indicating that the company is strengthening its service efficiency.
Overall, the developments point to a busy year for AV and robotaxi services, with significant market opportunities ahead, particularly in mid-sized cities in the Sun Belt region.
