1045 GMT - Making Europe a leader in AI, semiconductors, connectivity but also in defense and space is an important topic, Renate Nikolay, deputy director-general for the European Commission's communications and technology agency, DG Connect, says at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. "This is important because these tech sectors are key engines of growth, and they are also stimulating other areas such as medicine, agriculture and mobility," Nikolay says at the technology conference. However, public funding will never be enough to support innovation, so private-sector investment in these critical sectors needs to be encouraged, she says speaking at a panel. "We need to open the space for important venture capital structures in Europe to really invest in European ecosystems, so startups can access the funding," she adds. (najat.kantouar@wsj.com)
