Elanco Animal Health to Commercialize Vaccine for Dairy Cattle to Battle Bird Flu Outbreak

Elanco Animal Health will commercialize an avian flu vaccine for dairy cattle after reaching an agreement with Medgene.

The developer and manufacturer of pet and farm-animal products said on Tuesday that Medgene reported that its vaccine has met all requirements of the U.S. Agriculture Department's platform technology guidelines and is in the final stages of review for conditional license approval.

Elanco said a cattle vaccine will be critical to slow transmission between birds and cattle, a potential catalyst as a bird flu outbreak has roiled farms and sent egg prices soaring.

"As egg prices soar and milk production wanes in infected dairies, the need for new solutions to curb disease spread is evident," said Elanco Chief Executive Jeff Simmons.
