WHY STOCKS ARE HOLDING UP DESPITE TARIFF, OTHER RISKS

Stocks have mostly held up in the face of tariff announcements and other concerns such as the popularity of Chinese AI model DeepSeek, and that's partly because the U.S. economy and earnings remain strong, Lauren Goodwin, economist and chief market strategist at New York Life Investments, said on Wednesday.

The benchmark S&P 500 .SPX is up more than 4% year-to-date.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced more plans for tariffs, saying that he intended to impose auto tariffs "in the neighborhood of 25%" along with similar duties on semiconductor and pharmaceutical imports.

Investors have been concerned that such moves will create higher inflation.

But, Goodwin said, "we don't know how tariffs will play out exactly, so I perceive the market saying - we don't know, so let's look through it until we do know."

"There's nothing an investor can do to control what happens with tariffs," she added.

At the same time, she said, "the economic backdrop for this market is strong; the earnings backdrop for this market is resilient."

Among recent data, a report showed U.S. producer prices increased solidly in January.

With equities, the firm is "staying invested but diversified," and "more inclined to deploy new capital toward large cap value equities than growth equities."
