Labor put to the test in Victoria

Labor in Victoria was hoping a record spending splurge and late-stage campaign blitz would stave off a loss in a byelection that no matter what the outcome will send a powerful message about voter sentiment in the state just ahead of the expected calling of the federal election.

Even if Labor retains Werribee – in growth corridor area in Melbourne’s working-class west which it holds with a 10.9 per cent margin – a strong swing against the party will be seen internally and externally as a blow to Premier Jacinta Allan.
