A home in Vail, Colo., is slated to go on the market for $78 million, making it the state's most expensive listing.
If the roughly 15,100-square-foot home sells at or near its asking price, it will break its own record for the ski town's priciest sale, set when it traded for $57.25 million in 2020, according to listing agent Tye Stockton of Compass.
The sellers are Kevin Ness, a Colorado biotech entrepreneur, and his wife, Stephanie Ness. The couple, who have four children, bought the six-story home in August 2020. "I envisioned all my little kids, as they grow up, having a floor for each of their families," said Kevin, who is a founder of the biotech companies QuantaLife, 10x Genomics and Inscripta. They have decided to sell because they don't use it as much as they'd hoped, he said.
Kevin told The Wall Street Journal in 2020 that he and Stephanie bought the Vail property as a getaway from their Boulder home, which is now also on the market with an asking price of $15 million, according to Zillow.
The roughly 0.7-acre Vail property is just a few minutes' walk from shopping and dining in central Vail. The 11-bedroom house has panoramic views of the Gore mountains, as well as an indoor pool, two heated outdoor pools, two hot tubs, two kitchens, two elevators, a movie theater and a gym.
The building had been renovated and divided into a duplex when the Nesses bought it. They spent more than three years returning it to a single-family home and making other upgrades, including redoing the fifth-story deck, which now has a fire pit, misters, heaters, speakers and a retractable television that rises from the floor.
Kevin declined to disclose how much he spent on the renovation, but said he gave his building team an unlimited budget.
Colorado's most expensive home sale was a $108 million Aspen deal in April 2024, according to Zillow.
