Rep. Victoria Spartz (R., Ind.), a frequent critic of Mike Johnson who declined to support Rep. Kevin McCarthy during the January 2023 speaker race, will be closely watched on Friday after blasting Republican leadership in recent weeks.
She had almost disappeared from Congress entirely. In 2023, she vowed to retire from politics but later reversed her decision, well after several other candidates from her district dumped large sums of money into their campaigns for her seat. She narrowly defeated an Indianapolis businessman in the Republican primary in May, a close call that shows her political vulnerability in an era when Trump allies have threatened to fund primary challenger lawmakers who defy him.
