South32 Says Escalating Civil Unrest in Mozambique Hinders Mozal Aluminum Operations; Shares Down 5%

South32 (ASX:S32) said road blockages amid escalating civil unrest hinder the transport of raw materials to Mozal Aluminum in Mozambique, according to a Wednesday filing with the Australian bourse.

The company is withdrawing its production guidance for the aluminum smelter as it responds to the situation, the filing said.

While there have been no security incidents, the company implemented contingency plans to mitigate the operational impacts of the unrest, according to the filing.

Shares fell more than 5% in midday trade Wednesday.
