Slower U.S. Job Market Mirrored in KC Fed Survey -- Market Talk

1615 ET - U.S. weekly jobless claims were reassuring, but elsewhere there are signs of more slack in the labor market. In a Kansas City Fed survey of regional manufacturers in September, 45% say they are getting more job applicants for each vacancy compared with a year ago, versus 17% that are getting fewer. Other signs of weakness in the survey: declines in production, shipments and backlogs. One responding firm, not identified, reports that this August was its worst in more than 20 years. The Kansas City Fed's District includes western Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Colorado and northern New Mexico. (matt.grossman@wsj.com, @mattgrossman)
