Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Edge Higher Pre-Bell Monday Ahead of Key Inflation Data

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.2% higher in Monday's premarket activity, ahead of a key inflation data release due later in the week.

US stock futures were also edging higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing marginally by 0.04%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.2% before the start of regular trading.

The September Chicago Fed National Activity Index will be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by the S&P Global flash US PMI composite at 9:45 am ET.

Federal Reserve Chicago President Austan Goolsbee speaks at 10:15 am ET, and Federal Reserve Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari speaks at 1 pm ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 0.4% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1% higher.

Power Play:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) retreated 0.1%, while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) advanced 0.6%. The iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was inactive.

Wheels Up Experience (UP) stock was up 5.5% before the opening bell after the company said that major investors, including Delta Air Lines (DAL), agreed to extend the lock-up period on their shares for an additional year, keeping 97.2% of shares under restriction until Sept. 20, 2025.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) was up 0.1%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.7% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) advanced 0.1%.

Intel (INTC) shares were up 3.7% in recent Monday premarket activity after Bloomberg News reported Sunday, citing unnamed sources, that Apollo Global Management (APO) has offered to invest as much as $5 billion in Intel.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was up by 0.2%.

Uranium Energy (UEC) stock was up 3.3% before Monday's opening bell after the company said it has agreed to acquire Rio Tinto's (RIO) Wyoming uranium assets, including the 3,000 ton-per-day processing mill Sweetwater Plant and a portfolio of uranium mining projects with 175 million pounds of historic resources for $175 million.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was inactive while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) slipped 0.4%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

AstraZeneca (AZN) shares were down 1.9% premarket after the company said that a phase 3 trial comparing datopotamab deruxtecan with chemotherapy did not achieve statistically significant overall survival in patients with breast cancer previously treated with endocrine-based therapy and at least one other therapy.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was up 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) gained 0.2%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was 0.4% higher.

Nike (NKE) shares were down 1.2% pre-bell after JPMorgan cut its price target for the company to $80 from $83.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.2%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.3% lower.

HSBC Holdings (HSBC) stock was up 1.1% pre-bell Monday after the company said it agreed to sell its German private banking business to BNP Paribas.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 0.5% to $71.35 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 1.6% at $2.47 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 0.2%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) rose 1.4%.

Gold futures for December were up 0.1% at $2,648.50 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures fell 1.6% to $31 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) gained 0.1%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 1.4% lower.
